If You Can't Beat Them, Join Them: The Jesse Ventura Factor
I e-mailed homebusinessmag.com asking them if they would be interested in reviewing
my new book, Thinking Like An Entrepreneur. It would have been a nice site to see my book reviewed on
as they have about 1,400 links to them. I knew this from using the cool tool
Linkpopularity.com which allows you to get an idea of what other sites are linking to any
given site. Linkpopularity.com is one of the best tools for the online marketer.
Homebusinessmag sent me a one line e-mail saying they didn't have the staff,
resources, or inclination to review my book.
"Now, wait one pea-picking minute here," I said. "You claim that you are an
indispensable resource for home-based businesses, and here I've written what I feel is
maybe the best business book ever. It teaches important topics like understanding cash
flow, profit margins, how money compounds within a business, bootstrapping, and a hundred
other things. And YOU DON'T HAVE TIME TO EVEN TAKE A LOOK AT IT?"
"How can this be?" homebusinessmag.com is a huge magazine in the home business magazine market.
And, I noticed Our Own Governor of Minnesota, Jesse The Body and Ex-Wrestler, Ventura is
the cover story of your latest issue. There he is smiling away at me from your web
site. "Yet, you don't have time to read my book, one that can really help small business
readers avoid making serious business mistakes that could put their companies in jeopardy.
It's a book about financial decision-making, and studies have shown that understanding
basic financial decision-making is a key factor in enhancing the chances of a new
company's success."
One of my favorite small business columnists, Paul Tulenko, recently quoted a study by the Ohio
Business Institute which "indicated that an ignorance of accounting could mean a nine in 10 chance
of failure, while taking a basic bookkeeping class could improve your chances of success to seven
in 10" (You can learn more about Tulenko at Tulenko.com)
Now, my book is not about bookkeeping per se, but it is about financial decision-making, which
is just as important and probably more so in understanding how to build
a business. Certainly, it's at least worth their taking a
look at.
Well in short, they weren't interested. They wanted to interview Ventura instead. Not that Ventura isn't an interesting
character. Somehow he even won some entrepreneur of the year award here in Minnesota.
I guess getting elected puts him in the same class as Minnesota's greatest entrepreneurs
like Rick Born, Allaire, the brothers who are starting Excelsior-Henderson, and the founders
of Net Perceptions, one of the most innovative web companies around. I mean after all,
Ventura has sold a tremendous product--himself. He has achieved one of the great celebrity
turnarounds of all time--aging ex-wrestler whose popularity is on the wane big time pulls off
winning a gubernatorial election.
Suddenly, he has a book, Number Four on the Times Bestseller Lists.
(No, he didn't actually write the book) and his movie career will be given a big boost. Going
from a bit actor, who thinks he overshadowed Arnold (yes, THE ARNOLD) in the movie
Predator, Jesse Ventura will suddenly become someone who will probably command several
million dollars at the box office for the next film he is stars in. It will be the first
real film where he is actually the star. That's assuming, of course, he doesn't make a bid
for President of the United States of America. Chrysler couldn't have done a turnaround
better. I wish I could buy stock in the guy. But, I can't. Not yet, at least.
Fortunately, the same day I e-mailed another home business expert, Liz Folger, and
asked her if she would like to review my book. She replied "yes," enthusiastically, saying
she was always looking for good resources to help her readers. She would review the book.
You can find her site at
http://www.bizymoms.com
But, how can I possibly bring my book to the attention of the many readers of
homebusinessmag.com who might not also be aware of Liz Folger, Tulenko, and the other
small business columnists
they should probably be reading if they want to succeed in business? I wonder if I
could get Jesse to be on my site? Probably not. But, as it just so happens I do have a movie
script Governor Jess! What a fortunate coincidence! Since I don't think Jesse would
really be interested in making
it (especially after this piece), I offer it here for your reading enjoyment.

Oh, and by the way, if you have any pull with Jesse or Arnold, or Danny DeVito,
and you enjoy the script, your good recommendation that they should star in it would be
forever appreciated. Hmm... maybe we could even get Bill to act in it if we can get Sandra Bullock
to play the role of Cindy...
